From the Coat Off His Back to a Belfast Streetwear Powerhouse: DJK Lands at Badge
The independent label rooted in community, Northern Irish pride, and a never-quit attitude, DJK is available now at Badge, online and in-store.
A Partnership Built on a Shared Vision
Some brands just fit. Not just in terms of style, but in attitude, energy, and the kind of community they speak to. That’s exactly what you get with DJK – now available online and in-store at Badge Clothing.
Streetwear has always been about more than just clothes. At Badge, the focus is on combining the latest trends with high-quality fabrics and standout brands, letting people express themselves with confidence whether on the streets or in everyday life. With DJK, that ethos finds a perfect match. The Belfast‑based fashion house has carved out its own space in the scene, merging elements of luxury into everyday lifestyle wear while never forgetting the working‑class roots that got it there.
As David James Kerr, the founder, puts it, the partnership clicked immediately. “Badge bought into the DJK vision straight away and we didn’t have to change or amend anything. Both customers would be the same demographic, so I think it’s a win‑win for everyone.”
From Selling the Coat Off His Back
The DJK story doesn’t start in a boardroom or a big‑budget studio. It starts with bankruptcy.
Founded in 2015, David James Kerr literally began by selling the coat off his back. During a period of financial difficulty, his beloved Stone Island jacket had to go on eBay. When it held around 50% of its value, curiosity took over.
He used those funds to reinvest in other pre‑owned Stone Island and CP Company jackets, flipping them from a small bedroom business. That bedroom became a lock‑up. The lock‑up became a retail premises. Soon, DJK was shifting hundreds of jackets a week and expanding into brands like Prada, Gucci, Moncler and Canada Goose – all while learning the ins and outs of designer fashion, trends and materials.
Fast forward, and DJK became one of the hottest destinations for Italian streetwear in the UK, with its famous Black Friday sales generating millions, crashing websites, and seeing customers queue overnight. But despite that success, the question always remained: What next?
Prints That Stand Out and a Niche of Its Own
The answer was to stop building other people’s brands and start building his own. DJK isn’t about playing it safe. The brand has carved out a niche with custom designs and prints you won’t find anywhere else, alongside edgy slogans that most brands wouldn’t risk.
There are clever details built into the collection that might go unnoticed at first. The “Paint Splatter” tracksuits feature mini DJK logos paint‑bombed onto the material, while the “Ninjaman” design has eyes that come to life within the DJK logo itself.
When it comes to balancing luxury with street edge, the approach is considered. As David explained to us, “Sometimes less is more with the streetwear. We can take inspiration from Dior and Stone Island and reverse engineer the pieces with our own DJK spin. When it comes to sportswear we can be a bit more playful with our own custom camo prints that stand out from anything else on the market.”
Belfast Roots, Working Class Pride
At the heart of DJK is a deep connection to Northern Ireland. David doesn’t shy away from Belfast’s complicated reputation – instead, he uses it as fuel.
“Our heritage is from Belfast,” he says. “Over the years it’s had a bad reputation, however we love to promote it through our designs.” That pride is stitched into every piece, from the cult‑favourite Belfast City Gun Club t‑shirt to the brand’s ongoing commitment to making quality affordable. “Working class customers always try and achieve that big ticket item, so we’ve made the brand affordable without compromising on quality or style.”
It’s an approach that’s earned DJK serious loyalty. “A high percentage of our customers are repeat and very loyal and always waiting for that next drop. We can’t make the garments fast enough!”
No Detail Overlooked
What really sets DJK apart is the attention to detail. From packaging and swing tags to wash labels, nothing is overlooked. That level of care extends to the fits too – pieces are cut with DJK’s own unique silhouette, offering a distinct alternative to off‑the‑rack streetwear.
It’s why the brand’s loyal following keeps coming back, and why the Black Friday queues started forming at 2am. As David recalls, “The stats are on our website displayed so we can say it was a £500,000+ weekend and we were blown away. We didn’t realise how much of a success that was for an independent – we were in it just getting on with our work.”
The Road Ahead
DJK recently closed its Belfast retail store – not as a step back, but as a strategic move forward. The focus now is on online growth and partnering with independent retailers like Badge, with plans to become a household name across the UK and Ireland.
For anyone trying to break into streetwear, David’s advice is simple. “Never quit. Everything starts with zero. Take small steps and grow with each order. Be persistent and take all feedback good and bad… Keep knocking on that door and one day it will open!”
